Dominion Energy is offering assistance to customers as SNAP benefits are reduced by 50% starting Nov. 1 due to the federal government shutdown.
NORFOLK, Va. — Dominion Energy is providing support to customers facing financial hardship as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are reduced to 50 percent of eligible households’ current allotments starting Nov. 1, 2025, amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The Food and Nutrition Service reduction, prompted by limited federal funding and court orders, affects SNAP recipients across the state. Dominion Energy is encouraging customers to seek help through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which offers utility bill payment assistance, energy crisis support, and weatherization or energy-related home repairs.
Eligibility is determined by each county’s Community Action Agency. Applicants are required to have household members’ names and Social Security numbers, proof of recent income, and a current utility bill. Non-citizens, including permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, may have additional requirements.
Residents can contact their local Community Action Agency, dial 2-1-1, or text “HELP” to 211-211 to access resources for food, housing, utilities, and more. Visit the Dominion Energy website for more information.
