In the days before ultrasounds many women didn’t know they were pregnant with more than one baby until they went into labour. My grandma was one of these women! She was a formidable woman, served in the RAF and lived to the ripe old age of 98 drinking a brandy every day. Last photo is my dad and his twin a little older

She makes a good Santa
Great photos.
That’s mad. I had twins and I knew from really early on. I knew which was on which side and they had different personalities while they were in there and I was prepared for two. I can’t imagine just finding out when they second one started coming out.
Your poor Grandad, ‘how’s it going in there love’? ‘We’re going to need a bigger pram!’
Great pics, she looks like a really nice lady-she reminds me of my own kind and loving grandma (similar ages)
I’m friends with twin brothers. They were born in 1984. Their Mum tells everyone that she didn’t know that she was having two until three days before they were due. The ultra sound that they had in the 80’s was nowhere near as good as it is now. My parents didn’t even keep my scan pictures because you couldn’t make anything out.
My Gran was a triplet in 1917 – obviously, my Nana had absolutely no idea whatsoever and was in complete shock after 3! When my Gran was pregnant with my Uncle in the 40s, she was quite large, so they x-rayed her stomach to check how many were in there!
My grandma had twins (my mum and aunt). Her entire pregnancy she argued with the midwives and doctors saying ‘theres definitely two knocking around in there’ and the doctor up until the last second still argued she just had one big baby 🤣
My great aunt and uncle were twins – not sure exactly on the year but around 1940! Apparently they were so small everyone was quite shocked they survived and they were local celebrities for a bit.
My mum had twins after she had me. She had no idea she was having two until an appointment about a week before they born. She went on her own, but was taking so long at the hospital that my dad went out to look for her. He found her wandering along the street crying in shock!
My mother in law also had twins before my husband was born. When she was in labour with him, she had a relief midwife at the delivery who became convinced she was having twins. The midwife seemed surprised when my MIL turned to my FIL and calmly said “You’d better make up the second cot”. In fact, my husband just turned out to be one very big baby, his mum always insisted it was because the twins had made so much room for him.
Your Grandma is absolutely hench holding those two like that. Fantastic!
I’m a twin. We were born in 78 and my parents had NO IDEA they were having twins! She was in labor almost 48 hrs before they finally did an emergency cesarian. I guess they way we were positioned in the womb, they only heard my heartbeat? Rumor has it that when they told my father (who was probably smoking ciggs in the waiting room lol) he fainted! He claims he just leaned against the wall for support! Great pic, thank you for sharing!
After a few brandies she’d be Freda Payne.
This happened to my nan, my dad and aunt are twins. My nan didn’t know until she was literally in labour.
They literally don’t make them like they used to
