  1. Economists overwhelmingly disagree. Tariffs typically raise consumer prices, reduce trade efficiency, and historically preceded economic downturns. Depression claims lack supporting evidence.

    And any legitimate economist can tell, free trade builds wealth and tariffs destroy free trade. A big cause of the Great Depression of the 1930s was not just the stock market but the “Smoot Hawley” tariff bill that restricted trade and destroyed the economy.

    He’s wacko if he thinks tariffs can get rid of trade imbalances. It’s a wacko theory and is illegitimate.
