Key objects missing from the Grand Egyptian Museum’s collection • FRANCE 24 English

gathering all of this together and there are still some questions from other museums as always happens when you want to be the museum for Egyptology. Some missing artifacts, some artifacts the museum still wants. There are there are there are several but there are three key objects I would say that are missing from this new museum. The Rosetta Stone uh that is in the British Museum, the Zodiac which is in the Louvre and the bust of Nefertiti which is in Berlin. Now, activists have actually set up online petitions calling um for these pieces to be returned to Egypt um with hundreds of thousands of signatures. And let me explain a bit why these three are so significant. The Rosetta Stone that was found in 1799 and it provided the key to deciphering hydrog. So, it kind of unlocked this entire language of ancient Egypt. Um it was discovered by the French army. Then it was seized by the British as war booty and Britain have had it ever since. And there’s also the Dendara um Dendera Zodiac. That is an ancient Egyptian celestial map that the French um a French team literally cut from the temple of Hatheror in upper Egypt in 1821. Then they removed it from its original location, took it back to France where it remains in the Louvre. Um and then the bust of Nefertiti that is this stunningly colorful um painted sculpture of the wife of Pharaoh Aeneton that’s in Berlin. Egypt accuses um German archaeologists of smuggling it out um of the country more than a sec a century ago. So the argument is for centuries um western institutions have argued that Egypt didn’t have um the knowhow really in the proper facilities um to care for these treasures. That’s not really an argument today um with the state-of-the-art museum that has been built. Um the question now is where is this justification to keep these artifacts that potentially really rightfully belong back in Egypt in this museum with.

As Cairo inaugurates the Grand Egyptian Museum Saturday, FRANCE 24’s Culture Editor Eve Jackson discusses several key objects missing from the new museum which include the Rosetta Stone in the British Museum, the Dendera Zodiac in the Louvre and the bust of Nefertiti in Berlin.

  1. Truly thanks for addressing this matter now and I wish you discuss this more. Now in Egypt we have all the rights and capability to restore, save and show what's mines and have been ceased.

  2. Egypt has about four copies of the same type of tablet as the Rosetta Stone. This one has value only for its role in the history of deciphering hieroglyphs.

  3. Hey world .. Egypt is rising ❤ and we're coming faster than you may think.. InshAllah 🇪🇬💪🏼
EGYPT will return all its treasures …

  4. 😂😂😂 Egypt doesn't have a place to keep it protected, this is ridiculous, it's not their business those pieces belongs to us,thank you madame for discussing this matter

  5. ''Welcome to the land of peace.''

Celebrating the same civilization that had everything built by slaves…yep, these pharoahs were really great guys to be celebrated and immortalized, indeed…

  6. Master (Sisi) you are the best man 👨 ever in the middle east and the world thank you for this great opportunity to the world to see Egyptian great museum

  7. That’s extraordinary, there’s no valid reason to keep the treasures of Egypt, out side of Egypt. Should be brought back to their home.

  8. Egypt is by far one of the most affordable tourist destinations for any tourist! Has an unprecedented wealth of geographic and historic attractions between 1/3 of the entire world's monuments; diving at the best reef-rich destinations on the red sea; luxury coastal destinations in new Alamein, North Coast of Mediterranean Sea. Hiking across literally thousands of gorgeous mountain ranges in Sinai. Versatile urban flavours with a myriad of daily and nocturnal activities across cities like Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, others. You name it, Egypt has it LITERALLY ALL and WAY MORE; and for a fraction of a fraction of the cost anywhere else.

Btw, am an Egyptian avid traveller, who's been across 80+ cities in 15 countries across 6 continents, and tell you internal tourism in my country has never ceased to surprise me up until this very moment!

  9. Coloinalist Europe should bear the historical and ethical responsibility of restoring looted heritage of Egypt and other ME countries. Shame on you!! Egypt's heritage and legacy only belongs to Egypt!
