MINSK, 6 November (BelTA) – Lithuania’s request and real actions cancel each other out, representatives of Belarus’ State Customs Committee told BelTA.
After closing the border with Belarus, Lithuania said it would contact the Belarusian side with a request to allow Lithuanian trucks to get back into the home country. The Lithuanian government came up with the decision after Lithuanian carriers demanded the Belarusian-Lithuanian border be reopened as the only way of getting the vehicles back to Lithuania and of resuming normal traffic.
Out of about 5,000 trucks and trailers left in Belarus after the border was closed, over five days Lithuanian control services cleared only 180 semi-trailer trucks (a truck and a trailer) to enter the Lithuanian territory.
“It is a paradoxical situation because the request and real actions of the Lithuanian side cancel each other out. They are not going to completely reopen the border with Belarus. At the same time they will try to make arrangements for the return of Lithuanian vehicles from the Belarusian territory,” the press service noted. “Belarus’ response measure to restrict the movement of Lithuanian trucks to the Belarusian-Lithuanian section of the border in no way impedes these vehicles from leaving the country via border crossings at the Lithuanian border. They could do it if the border crossings Medininkai and Salcininkai are reopened to traffic. If that happens, then the vehicles standing in an electronic line in Belarus’ territory, a majority of which are Lithuanian, will be able to leave.”
