Tariff refunds are now a very real possibility … and a giant ‘mess’

  1. The chances of businesses getting tariff refunds grew significantly on Wednesday after the Trump administration’s case to keep most of his levies in place was met with deep skepticism from multiple conservative and liberal justices.

    The big question now: How would potential tariff refunds work?

    The federal government has collected nearly $90 billion in revenue from the tariffs being challenged, according to US Customs and Border Protection data as of September 23. That number is set to keep growing at least until a verdict is announced, which could be months from now. And It’s unclear who might be eligible for a refund if the justices rule against the Trump administration.

  8. This will get lost in the noise, the tariffs are not necessarily the damaging thing its the uncertainty and constant rate changing. No logical leader thinks that changing tax rates based on how stiff their poop was that morning leads to good economic activity.

  9. There is no way to do a refund on tariffs that actually accurately refunds those who paid them. The businesses may have eaten some, but consumers definitely paid for most of the tariffs via increased prices (which also won’t come down if tariffs are refunded/removed).

  12. If this happens this has to be one of the biggest rug pulls on the American people. All these companies will get their money back and keep the money they made from the consumers, making them even more of a profit. They will likely keep their prices the same too.
