Is there a reason some vans, like Royal Mail's, have "max 70" when that's the maximum for any car in the UK legally? Sure, for bigger lorries where it says "max 50," the sticker makes sense, but for 70, it seems a bit pointless.

  1. Because people go faster than 70 on the motorway

  2. The vehicle is mechanically limited to that speed, if you want to go faster, overtake, but there’s no point in riding their bumperusing the horn.

  3. To remind you that it doesn’t matter how close you get or how angry you get at them for having the audacity to do the speed limit, they *can’t* go any faster because the governor is set to that limit.

  4. It means “I’m not going any faster so don’t ride my arse, dickhead!”.

  5. 70 is just a guideline for some people.

“I can’t speed up to get out of your way, so fuck off” was too long to fit on the sticker.

  6. Because people are bellends when they drive, if that van was overtaking someone doing 65 they would expect them to go over the limit to get round as fast as possible and move back over and get irate the manoeuvre took longer than expected.

  7. To let other road users know they’re limited to 70mph? It seems pretty self explanatory. Yes the legal speed limit on the motorway is 70mph but there’s seems to be an informal tolerance of a bit faster on our motorways.

  8. So that if they exceed the speed limit, you can report them. It’s a way of keeping the royal mail/employees compliant with the law.

  9. It means, if you are behind me and I am driving at 70mph, i wont be able to go any faster – so dont expect me to be capable of overtaking another vehicle that is also doing 70+.

    i.e. It can’t pass a car going 71mph.

Its probably there to prevent postman pat racking up speeding tickets on motorways.

  10. I think it’s to prevent people on a motorway sticking their bonnet up the van’s back passage.

  11. I will say btw I was in the passengers seat taking this photo

  12. It’s to tell road users that the vehicle has an electronic limiter installed that it has to display by law

  13. On the motorway quite a few people speed up to 80mph. If impatient speeding drivers get stuck behind one of these vans in a lane (or on a single carriageway), the sticker aims to show them that it’s not the driver who is sticking to 70mph but the van’s speed is limited to that level. This does tacitly acknowledge that many people go over the speed limit.

  14. By the way loving the numberplate resembling KNOCK!

  15. Maybe… you can never be sure
    There’ll be KN20 XCK, ring
    Letters through your door

  16. Wait until you drive one and constantly get stuck behind BMW saloons doing 69mph.

  17. Are people really this sheltered where they need questions like this answered for them?

  18. To let people know that, if it’s doing 50, it’s a human choice.

  19. For the mail vans near me it seems to mean “I’m aiming for 70” round the local housing estates.

  20. To make the driver go faster. “This snail could be at 70mph.” So your love letter gets delivered to Bob faster.

  21. Probably the same “don’t sue us if this vehicle is exceeding the limit as the driver probably made it faster so it’s on them not us” bs that’s incorporated within society now

  22. Limited to 70mph. So it can’t use the 10% allowance for overtaking or break the law in the event of necessity.

  23. You kinda answered your own question- a sticker saying “Max 70” will have a maximum speed of 70mph.

Hope that cleared it up for you

  24. It’s for the BMW drivers. Gives them a challenge. The tiny writing on there just says “Surely you can get closer. What are you, an Audi driver?”

  25. It means the engine has a built in limiter, so don’t tailgate expecting them to speed up past that limit.

  26. I wonder if I can get a sticker that says “Vehicle limited to the current speed limit. And if you can read this you’re to fecking close too”

  27. To try to reduce tailgating by warning people they have a speed limiter fitted.

I don’t know how many people inconsiderate enough to tailgate instead of overtaking would be considerate enough to notice the sticker and change their behavior though.

  28. They have limiters on them that stop them going faster than 70mph. (Under their own power – downhill with a tailwind and shouting Geronimo they may hit 73 )
