State of emergency declared in the Philippines after Typhoon Kalmaegi • FRANCE 24 English
This drone footage shows some of the destruction caused by Typhoon Calmegi. In the storm’s wake, residents are left to pick through the wreckage and mourn their dead. This resident of the municipality of Leiluan lost her sister in the flooding. My sister, who has a mental disability, was inside her room. We tried to pry the door of her bedroom. It wouldn’t open. We tried to open it with a kitchen knife and a crowbar, but it wouldn’t budge. I tried punching the door. It still wouldn’t open. We tried until the water got really high. It reached over our heads. Flood waters swept through Cebu Province, destroying homes. Residents say the authorities could have done more to warn them of the danger. I think that the local government was really weak. We were not prepared. They could have warned us at the very minimum. Then we would have been prepared. Deaths could have been avoided. I know a lot of people died. After wreaking devastation in the Philippines, Typhoon Kali is heading towards Vietnam where it could bring waves as high as 8 m. The region is no stranger to typhoons. Leaving at least 142 dead, and another 127 people missing, making it the deadliest typhoon so far of 2025. The region is no stranger to typhoons: the Philippines has seen around 20 this season and could face 3 or 5 more by the end of 2025. Another, potentially even stronger typhoon, Tropical Storm Fung-wong is advancing on the country.
