All Saints’ Day is a major Catholic holy day celebrated every Nov. 1. This year, Catholic faith leaders spoke out against ICE after they say they were barred from giving Communion to detainees at a Chicago detention center during the holiday.

The Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership sent a letter to the Illinois detention facility in Broadview to request that detainees would be able to receive Communion, according to ABC News. Despite numerous attempts from CSPL and the mayor of Broadview, ICE reportedly did not allow detainees to receive Communion to mark the Holy Day on Nov. 1.

On Tuesday, a reporter asked Pope Leo XIV for his take on the situation: “Holy Father, in Chicago authorities banned that Catholic priests could give Communion to migrants in detention. Do you have any advice for them — how to get spiritual Communion when they can’t get a real one? And also, what kind of rights migrants under detention should have?”

Here’s what he said: “Jesus says very clearly, at the end of the world, we’re going to be asked, ‘How did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or not?’ And I think there’s a deep reflection that needs to be made in terms of what’s happening.”

He continued, saying, “Many people who’ve lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what’s going on right now. The spiritual rights of people who have been detained should also be considered, and I would certainly invite the authorities to allow pastoral workers to attend to the needs of those people.”

“Many times they’ve been separated from their families for a good amount of time. No one knows what’s happening, but their own spiritual needs should be attended to,” he finished.

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security responded to a tweet about the pope’s comments. She denies the claim that any detainees have been denied Communion.

A lot is happening in this latest clash between the Trump administration and the Catholic church, and people have thoughts on all of it. One user tweeted: “A fun thing about living in 2025 is that the pope has to personally appeal to the President and Vice-President of the United States to stop religiously persecuting Catholics.”

Another wrote: “The Pope just says that detainees should have access to pastoral care, THAT’S IT, and the replies to this tweet are INSANE. Like, y’all know you have to face God one day, right??”

Some people are pointing out the ironic timing of this situation, as it follows recent comments from JD Vance, who said he wants his wife, who is Hindu, to convert. “For all of JD Vance’s talk about his Catholicism and wanting his wife to convert, the BARE MINIMUM Catholic thing he can do as Vice President is ensure migrants can receive the Eucharist,” someone tweeted.

Others are pointing out how uniquely qualified Pope Leo XIV is to address American issues: “The benefits of the newest Woke Pope being from America is that he’s giving extra attention to the bullshit in America. JD, this is the top person in the religion that you willfully joined and he is specifically calling you out.”

BuzzFeed will monitor how this Trump administration x Catholic Church beef progresses. In the meantime, what do you think about Pope Leo XIV’s comments?
