In Japan, Switch 2 Retail Sales Are Already Closing on PS5 1 Image: Push Square

The release of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in Japan last week was always going to be interesting, because the series is immensely popular and was available across Switch 2, Switch, and PS5.

According to Famitsu sales data, the Switch version sold best on Nintendo’s enormous install base, shifting 232k copies.

But the Switch 2 edition’s 84k units was not far behind the PS5 version’s 96k units, showing how the new machine is already closing on Sony’s console.

Now one important factor must be taken into account here: Famitsu only tracks physical sales, so even in Japan where digital represents a smaller portion of the picture than the rest of the world, a chunk of data is still missing.

But still, it shows how quickly Nintendo’s new console is catching up to the PS5 in terms of multiformat software sales mindshare.

PS5 has sold 7,129,204 units in Japan to date, while the Switch 2’s install base is at 2,551,846. Yet the numbers between tentpole multiformat titles are already this close.

One other factor worth considering here is that the Switch 2 version of the game is a controversial Game Key Card, but it seems that’s not really hindering Nintendo’s ability to shift software in its domestic region.

Of course, we know Japan as a whole tends to favour portability and that certainly works in Nintendo’s favour. But increasingly it’s looking like there’s very little Sony can do to disrupt Switch’s overall stranglehold on its home market.
