The group of children had travelled for seven hours overnight by train from Kyiv and reached the Polish border early yesterday morning, where they were unfortunately unable to continue their journey to Keighley.

As a result of wartime legislation, an additional certification was required for the accompanying adult to be permitted to leave Ukraine.

Despite the travelling group’s best efforts, including contacting senior Ukrainian political officials, wartime requirements meant securing the additional certification would take a number of days.

Kaue Garcia, managing director of Keighley Cougars, expressed his sadness at the situation

He said: “We feel extremely disappointed with the news we received this morning.

“The club and the whole community of Keighley were ready to welcome the group and give them the best week possible.

“Sadly, this is one of those situations beyond our control, but we are determined to rearrange the trip for the spring.”

The visit was part of a joint initiative between Keighley Cougars and Raiseprint, aimed at providing the Ukrainian youngsters, all passionate about league, with an opportunity to train, meet players, and experience the warmth of the town’s rugby community.

Cougars say they would like to extend a special thanks to Raiseprint for their continued support, and in particular to Steve and Louise Bell, whose generosity made the trip possible.

The club have also thanked RL Commercial, who donated tickets for the group to attend the Ashes match at Headingley this afternoon, as well as the RFL, who had arranged for the children to meet their hero Nathan Cleary prior to the game.

Cougars also paid tribute to the Mercure Hotel, as well as all the individuals and local businesses who prepared goodie bags and gifts for the children’s arrival.

The club added: “While today’s outcome is disappointing, the Cougars remain committed to making the trip happen in spring.

“Then, the children will not only enjoy a full week of activities, but they will also have the chance to see the Cougars in action.”
