The timing of the counts during next year's all-important Senedd election has been confirmed in a major announcement. Voters across Wales will head to the polls on Thursday, May 7, to have their say on who they would like to represent them in an expanded Senedd through an entirely new voting system.
Wales' electoral management board has confirmed that votes cast will be counted during the daytime on the day after the poll. Returning officers, who are in charge of running elections in Wales, have been instructed to begin counting the votes after 9am on Friday, May 8, instead of over night.

Plaid FTW
Well, that sucks.
that’s a shame – i did like a good election night
Plaid Cymru getting my vote!
I didn’t realise this hadn’t been formally announced yet.
In general i prefer to see votes counted quickly. Selfishly because i like a good election party. But also because not doing so opens to door to conspiracy theories about election rigging. Although I guess they will exist no matter what.
It makes sense. They did it in 2021 due to Covid and viewing figures for results coverage were huge compared to what they normally are. Probably a lot nicer for the counters too.
They should probably do an exit poll or something though to give the political nerds something to chew on over night. Ireland does it this way and still manages to retain most of the excitement.
Can I be the first to point out that this is a blatant attempt to rig the system to stop Nigel Farage being the next First Minister. Watch for unusual data traffic across the Atlantic on the night of May 7th/8th. Something, something, something Khan.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.
Ah that’s a bit sad, I always like a good election night!

Making it easier to rig the election
