Think tank calls for London Knowledge to be scrapped and minicabs to Ply-for-Hire

  1. Because the article doesn’t explain it well at all and assumes the audience know what it means, ply-for-hire = hailing a minicab on the street rather than pre-booking them.

  2. the knowledge maybe in age of satnav. But any ply for hire needs to be rgiously background checked which i dont believe minicabs are?

  3. I am imagining the response of the LTDA (taxi drivers group in London) will include language I would not use in front of children.

  4. This is just ideological. It’s the Adam Smith Institute. They’d suggest the same for virtually any industry. Bought and paid for.

  5. Me and my mates down the pub who spent £12
and half an hour of paperwork to register as a company are also now a think tank and we produced a report explaining why we should scrap taxis all together and instead ride around in horse drawn hot air balloons. Perhaps someone should write an article about us

  6. It would be a go-ahead to rip people off if they don’t know the borough or postcode of the location they’re after.

Say you want to go to Church Road, a cabbie with the knowledge will ask which one or whereabouts or what’s it near. Unless it’s blatantly obvious in that there’s a theatre or restaurant on the road.

The minicab driver will type in Church Road in to the sat nav and hope for the best. If I type Church Road, London into google I get a street in NW10, but I could have meant Church Road in SE19 or one of the many other ones.
