A Cornish man who carried out an "horrific" campaign of sexual and emotional abuse has been jailed for a decade.

Dylan Cathrae was found guilty of six offences after a trial at Truro Crown Court in October.

The jury heard the 20-year-old had raped and sexually assaulted one of his victims and was emotionally and physically abusive. On one occasion, he put cigarettes out on her body.

The judge said Cathrae's case was one of the "worst cases of coercive and controlling behaviour" he had ever seen.

Cathrae from Bude was jailed for offences including rape, assault by penetration, coercive and controlling behaviour and non-fatal strangulation.

He had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment against a second victim.

Cathrae was interviewed by detectives on multiple occasions about his abusive behaviour. When asked questions about the incidents he claimed that the reports of sexual offending were made up 'out of jealousy'.

When officers put to him that his behaviour could be construed as ‘obsessive’ and ‘controlling’, he replied saying, 'How’s that a bad thing?’.

Sentencing him to 10 years in prison, the judge told him: "This is one of the worst cases of coercive and controlling behaviour I have seen."

At the hearing today the victim read a statement to the court in which she said the crimes had ‘ruined (their) life’.

Investigating officer, detective constable Isla Ferguson said: “We welcome the sentence given and first and foremost I praise the victim for her strength and courage to report the crimes and support the criminal justice process.

“I hope that the outcome today may help her find some closure.

“I also hope that this case may encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to come forward and report it so that we can investigate and take action against perpetrators.”

  3. Sexual violence needs a whole life sentence. I’m sick of the leniency showed to people like this. Keep them out of society forever.

  8. I hope everyone in the prison he is being sent to knows what he did, should make for a long 10 years.

I got to the bit where it said he put cigarettes out on her and it instantly took me back to when I was 11 having people stub cigarettes out on my head because they thought it was funny and just having to take it because that’s what I thought friends were. Fuck him fuck his existence I hope he rots and then is conscious of his body turning to compost!
