# BYD promotes LFP batteries on safety grounds, with over 80% of battery installations in China being LFP in 2025
**Summary:**
At the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, BYD’s Li Yunfei strongly advocated for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, positioning safety as the company’s paramount concern. BYD maintains LFP batteries across all its vehicle models, contrasting with competitors who use ternary lithium batteries to achieve longer ranges.
**Key points:**
Li emphasized that LFP batteries offer superior safety characteristics compared to ternary lithium alternatives, with thermal runaway temperatures exceeding 500°C versus under 300°C for ternary lithium. He cited China’s 15-year experience electrifying public bus fleets with LFP technology as proof of reliability, noting the absence of serious fire incidents despite 500,000 BEV buses carrying millions of passengers.
LFP batteries also demonstrate greater longevity, maintaining capacity beyond 3,500 charge-discharge cycles compared to approximately 2,000 cycles for ternary lithium batteries.
Market data from January-September 2025 shows LFP battery installations reached 493.9 GWh, representing a 42.5% year-on-year increase and capturing over 80% of the Chinese EV battery market.
Li called on the industry to prioritize safety over range specifications, warning that some brands continue using ternary lithium batteries primarily to advertise longer driving distances. BYD’s philosophy: “Safety is fundamental. Safety is the greatest luxury.”
It’s cheap and relatively safe. Cheap is probably the more important factor.
The safety is better.
But let’s be honest, the main draw is that they ARE CHEAP.
I expect BYD in three to five years in the states, going to be a blood bath if they can make a good sedan and suv for 30-40k after tarifs
LFP batteries are very safe but Sodium-ion batteries are even safer.
Something that stood out to me is that the gigawatt-hours of energy stored in cars is enormous!
