Syrian president al-Sharaa arrives in US for landmark White House visit • FRANCE 24 English
Ahmed Alshara has worked to appear as moderate as possible since taking power in Syria. After swapping his combat uniform for a suit, the former jihadist has shared images of himself dropping his jacket to play basketball with US troops. This before arriving for a historic visit in Washington. Alshara has already been in the US in September. where he addressed the UN General Assembly. He has met with Donald Trump back in May in Riyad. His immediate goal is to have all sanctions on Syria lifted permanently. This includes sanctions on industries and individuals. Donald Trump not only supports that, the US is the one that brought the resolution lifting sanctions from Alshara and his interior minister to the UN Security Council. we’re going to meet and I think he’s doing a very good job. It’s a tough neighborhood and he’s a tough guy. You know, we took the sanctions off at the request of Turkey, at the request of actually Israel because as Syria hopes to restart its economy, get international funds to rebuild itself after the devastating war, the US has its own interests. It hopes Syria will join the international alliance against the Islamic State. The US also plans to establish a military base near Damascus to monitor the situation on the ground. It hopes Syria and Israel would normalize their relations. This way, Iran would not be able to use Syrian territory to resume weapon deliveries to its ally Hezbollah and Lebanon. The US would also monitor the humanitarian situation on the ground after attacks targeting religious minorities in several regions of Syria.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in the US on Ssturday where he is due to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House – the first such visit by a Syrian president since the country’s independence in 1946. Ahead of al-Sharaa’s visit the leader was removed from the US terrorism blacklist. Shirli Sitbon has this story.

More gold than those home Depot painted gold plastic thingies propagating our White House.
Sometimes I feel a little European myself.
It's hard to explain, but it comes through in small moments like when I slow down to enjoy a meal, appreciate a quiet walk, or take in pieces of history and art that feel older than time. It's not about geography as much as it is about a way of seeing things a rhythm, a mindset, a certain appreciation for life's details.
Maybe that's just the part of me that loves connecting across cultures and finding beauty in the world's familiar corners. 🎭
Al-Sharaa could bring Syria a lot of interest and hope in creating new relationships with foreign powers, particularly with the US. Unrelatedly, avoiding shaking hands with women could as well tarnish his image/persona that has to be "vetted" by the same evoked foreign powers.🤔💭
Terrorist
He is reporting back to headquarters
We know who promote terrorists its clear to sea who's funding who.
Hope he likes all the asbestos dust
Dictator, unelected "president" !!!
A man with a problematic past. Weird how the US just lifted his $6 million bounty just like that.
He receives the Al Quaeda leader, but Mamdani is the problem
I truly hopes he can be pragmatic and learn how to coexist with other minority groups in Syria in peace. unfortunately he will be under immense pressure from other hard core Islamists groups and Iran
good concrete
