Rome 1885

  1. When I read *Tales of the Alhambra*, Washington Irving’s account of his stay at the Alhambra in 1829, what intrigued me the most were all the ordinary people living inside the then-abandoned fort. It’s amazing what urbanisation did to change our perceptions of historical sites, now visited by the millions every year.

So many views have been lost to time. Imagine the crooked Medieval streets of pre-Haussmann Paris, the wooden houses and shops on old London Bridge. So much provincial charm lost.

  2. Imagine that. Almost 1500 years after the sacking of Rome and it probably still looked more shitty than before the sacking

  3. “What? Oh, this old thing? Oh, it’s been here since forever. No idea what it is though. Hope they demolish it soon though, it looks terrible!”
