The following are the top stories in Malta’s newspapers on Monday.
Times of Malta leads with news that Jan Marsalek, a fugitive and suspected Russian spy, has been named in a London civil court dispute as a secret financier of a 2016 Libyan oil project linked to a Maltese company.
The newspaper also reports that a potential alternative to a metro system that is both cheaper and faster to set up could be on the horizon in the UK, thanks in part to a Maltese engineer.
The Malta Independent leads its front with Prime Minister Robert Abela’s comments to party supporters on Sunday that while the Budget announced a couple of weeks ago was the “best ever”, next year’s “will be even better”.
The newspaper also publishes comments to party supporters by Opposition leader Alex Borg, who on Sunday said Abela’s decision to announce the White Rocks project during his Budget reply was a “panic reaction” to the PN’s replica proposals.
In-Nazzjon publishes comments by Borg, who, in the same interview reiterated that the Maltese people were the biggest victims in the government’s hospitals’ deal. In another article on the front page, In-Nazzjon carries the headline ‘The Maltese are leaving historic cities, while foreigners are moving in’.
