Belgium [has a lot](https://www.museumpassmusees.be/nl/aanbod#:~:text=ter%20Potterie%20Museum%20voor%20Spontane,en%20de%20Krijgsgeschiedenis%20Het%20Reuzenhuis) of musea. Which is a good thing! However, not all musea are built equally.
Me and my girlfriend (both engineers, but love history) are going on a museum spree, trying to visit nice musea and even looking at donating money to a specific museum (e.g. was thinking of becoming a [friend of the RMAH](https://www.amrah-vkmkg.be/friends-2/?lang=en) for like €150). Note that if you have a favorite museum, please help them out.
This got me thinking, are there any musea you really like, and why (big musea like fine-arts, or small musea). For example I went to a few already (a list of some):
* [Royal Museum of Art and History](https://www.artandhistory.museum/en): I went there a few times, and don’t really like it. The museum has extremely cool artifacts, which they claim is up to level with the Louvre and the British museum. BUT, they don’t tell a story, It’s just a collection of things and what they are and what they meant. Also the museum is really do some renovation like the Congo-museum has gotten. Lastly, for some reason their history stops at around 1500. Don’t know if I’ll donate to them. 2/5
* [Royal Museum of Middle-Africa](https://www.africamuseum.be/en): Genuinly like this museum. Went before and after the renovation. They did a lot of good things, and this museum definetly tells you the story of Congo, of their heritage and history, their language, their animals, … , however, it is not “my thing”. 5/5 can recommend, even if you don’t like it, it’s a nice afternoon.
* [War Heritage Museum](https://www.klm-mra.be/D7t/nl) in Brussel: Been some time, but last time I went it was a nice visit, but everything felt a bit old and dates (sorry u/WarHeritageInstitute**,** maybe it has become better now?). Still 3/5 was interesting.
* [Ijzer Tower](https://www.museumaandeijzer.be/): IMHO one of the best musea in Belgium (as a WOI and WOII nerd) and can only recommend, tels an amazing story of what it was like. 4/5
Obviously I missed a lot (e.g. [PARCUM](https://www.parcum.be/) in Leuven)
So what are your favorite musea (big or small) and why?
Would you consider donating to them?

Het Vleeshuis en Plantijn Moretus in Antwerpen
Ijzertoren is my favorite, although I haven’t visited that many musea (yet).
The museum of natural sciences in Brussels is also a great one, specifically because it’s not only the main exhibitions that are worth your time, but the temporary ones are often interesting as well. Finding a spot to park can be a hassle, though.
The James Ensor house in Oostende is also fun, but short. I think it only takes 1 hour to get through it.
In Flanders Fields, Ieper.
If you want to do alot of musea, get a MuseumPass. It only costs about €60 per person and grants free access to LOADS of musua.
Visserij museum zeebrugge.
Heritage museum bouvignes.
Kina Gent.
There are a lot of hidden gems
Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren: [https://www.galloromeinsmuseum.be/](https://www.galloromeinsmuseum.be/)
I have to admit I haven’t been there in the last decade, but I remember enjoying strolling around there when I was younger. I guess you do need to be somewhat into ancient/roman history.
Lots of items were also found locally considering Tongeren started as a Gallo-Roman settlement. It also makes Tongeren the oldest city in Belgium.
