President Michael D Higgins made an emotional final public appearance on Sunday.
A round of applause filled the air at the end of the Remembrance Sunday service, as well-wishers bid farewell to President Higgins, 84, who is set to officially step down as President of Ireland at midnight on Monday, November 10, 2025, reports the Irish Mirror.
President-elect Catherine Connolly’s inauguration takes place on November 11, 2025. Speaking at the event held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, President Higgins reflected on his 14-year tenure as President of Ireland, calling it “a privilege”.

“It was a privilege to be Uachtarán na hÉireann and particularly, it was a privilege to meet the wonderful people who came to see us in Áras an Uachtaráin – they were all so welcome and they also appreciated being part of a kind of inclusive society that we are all aiming for,” he said.
President Higgins‘ wife, Sabina Coyne, was also present at the event, echoed her husband’s sentiments. She said they “did our best” during the two seven-year terms.
