This is what you risk trying to intervene. Some people have no idea how bloody feral some of the teenagers in Dublin are. This almost ended up in a bloody murder case over a street fight. Hope the man makes a swift recovery and is not too damaged, physically or emotionally.

A friend of a friend was telling me about this before I’d heard about it in the papers, he was saying this same gang of lads are always causing trouble in the shop he works in and whenever they call the gards they say they’re not going to come because there’s nothing they can do

I think this is only going to get worse before it gets better and there unfortunately is no quick fix.. Housing crises, rising inflation, and rising food prices are going to put more stresses on society as a whole while our judicial system has left the gardai impotent to actually do anything.
You can lock them up for six months or do some vigilante style justice but the same systemic issues are there that gave rise to it in the first place. Besides, they will go back to the same shitty parents and same shitty friends and do the same shitty things.
I think most of this stems from poor parenting, ie parents who don’t give a shit about where they’re kids are and whether they are in school or not. Many of these parents likely have poor coping skills, as well as alcohol and drug issues. And if they don’t their children will.
I’d love to know what interventions have actually been shown to work?
Things I would think about..
Drug legalization: likely would lessen drug use among parents and teens, would hopefully reduce power of gangs and lessen their hold on impressionable kids.
Reduce off licence hours, ban alcohol advertising: don’t have to increase tax as people will still buy it, but if you reduce exposure and opportunities to buy could make a difference.
Promoting military service: not necessarily mandatory, but could give young adults some much needed structure and maybe a route to a better life, need to improve soldier pay etc for this to work
Free books for kids: dolly parton style intervention..
Shortening summer holidays: just two weeks off, shock horror. Less time to lose ground school wise and less time to get in trouble. Would need to get past teachers unions, could pay them more.
Law reform:. Need to empower gardai to actually enforce the law. Need to penalise parents of kids who act like hooligans.
