My Crack at Regions of England. Thoughts?

  1. Gloucestershire is classed as West Country so needs to be orange.

  2. Not bad. While the Home Counties are technically just the ones immediately around London I think Oxfordshire, Sussex, and Hampshire do definitely have home county characteristics. I’d just say Bedfordshire is definitely not East Anglia.

  3. The part that’s always a mess is the High Peak. If you live there you realise that in terms of the region people *associate* themselves with, it’s kind of split between the Manchester and the Sheffield areas – and not the Trent / East Midlands region at all.

  4. East Anglia does not stretch that far into the midlands. Cambridgeshire is arguably not even wholly in East Anglia.

  5. Since you’re already using the names of 3 heptarchy Kingdoms, and Dumnonia, why not call “Borders” Northumbria? Oh, and while we’re at it, please make Hampshire a part of Wessex, they would surely miss their old capital.

  6. Hampshire should obviously be Wessex, not London and the Home Counties

  7. Essex, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight are definitely not the Home Counties. Two are too far away and the other is too culturally different.

  8. You’d have to rename the brown bit. Not having that!

  9. As someone from Gloucestershire how DARE you put us in with Shropshire, it’s ridiculous we’re southwestern.

  10. Yorkshire looks like the face of a sleeping cartoon giant 🧐🤔😎

  11. I always prefer Cumbria when joined with Northumbria, like in this map. I feel like we have more in common and have shared cultural assets like Hadrians Wall, the Border Reivers, etc. Borders is an odd name as durham is a long way from the border. I’d use Northumbria if it was combined like that.

The rest I’m not knowledgable enough about, except “Trent” is clearly part of Mercia. If Mercia isn’t all of the Midlands, then it should be east and West Midlands. East Anglia also looks like it goes too far west?

  12. Worcestershire being separate to the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Staffordshire is annoying me

  13. South Warwickshire would rather not be anywhere near Coventry or Brum or even N Warwickshire. Thanks awfully.

  14. Yellow should be called Lancashire-Cheshire-Merseyside, but yes this division of regions makes a lot of sense.

  15. A bit weird to chop east anglia differently to how it’s already defined as a region

  16. The regions have limited cultural and historic distinct identities. Feels more like an administrative map for bureaucrats to sort e.g. health or education zones

  17. No that’s what not I said, you know that. I said Gloucestershire is not West Country.

  18. I read this too fast and thought one of the regions was called ‘Borkshire’.

  19. Hampshire is 100% Wessex. Certainly not Home Counties.

  20. Portsmouth here

Don’t like being lumped in with London
