I became an Irish citizen today — thanks for having me, lads. 🥰☘️

  1. William James.

It almost sounds like a cartoon enemy of Ireland.

Like the final boss in an Ireland video game.

    Cuchulain Vs William James

  2. Been waiting since January for mine to go through.. how long did the process take for yourself?

  3. Welcome to the new citizens club. A few notes:

    * There’s a few good groups on Facebook to join (e.g., Expats in Dublin, etc.)
    * Daft.ie. is a great place to find housing (so cheap to find a place!)
    * Irishjobs.ie is a great place to find low-cost bananas
    * Join me in moving the phrase ‘Plastic Paddie’ from pejorative status to high-end compliment
    * Any kids you already had can’t get citizenship unless they live in Ireland at least three years; future babies can get it automatically
    * U2 is one of the greatest bands to come out of Ireland, don’t let these lads try to tell you different
    * Gaelic is a difficult language to learn; try something easier like written Chinese (我不会说中文)

    That’s all for now.

  4. So, drinks on you at your local? I’m sure there must have been a second page to your letter informing you of that obligation that got lost.

  5. Welcome!! Hope you’ll feel welcome to our slice on the earth!

I know it’s not directly related, but I do reqlly like the tone and sentiment of the letter to new citizens.

We give our departments an awful hard time(quite deservedly in many cases) but I do believe we should give praise where due as well.

  6. Congratulations! You’ve inspired me to get to it. Even if I only visit, I’d like to claim my family’s birthright. First round on me.

  7. Congrats! Did you apply by yourself or via a solicitor? I’ve lived for 8 out of the last 10 years in Ireland (two year-long stints abroad during that time) but a lot of that time has been spent as a student (I’m from another EU country) so no tax records and often no bills/leases as I was in dodgy digs etc. So I probably won’t be able to provide 3x proof of address per year and actually can’t even remember all my addresses in Ireland… I’d really like to get naturalised eventually though as I consider Ireland my home.

  8. Starting my application process now! Really cannot wait – it’s been the most welcome country I’ve ever lived in, and I hope to keep continuing to build my life here. Congrats to you, sir!

  9. I love this letter. It’s such a happy thing when so many things that come in brown envelopes with black harps on them aren’t

  10. when did you apply? me wife completed the garda vetting 3 or 4 months ago. and will be leaving for holidays from july for 2 months (for the kids summer holidays) and we’re concerned that we’ll receive the decision while we are away

  11. You’re not a fully fledged citizen yet, you’ve a week to watch the Father Ted box set and there’s a quiz after that!!

Thank you for the gold whoever it was, I appreciate the sentiment. However if you have extra cash maybe consider giving to help the Ukrainian refugees or even a homelessness charity operating in the country. But thank you anyway.

  12. Congratulations on your Irish Citizenship! That is a real nice letter. Much, much better than the letter I received when I became an Irish citizen, back in 2015. However, I acquired citizenship through the Foreign Birth Registry. Enjoy your new Country!
