Solar-powered cooking gains popularity in Mexico • FRANCE 24 English

Here in sunny Waka, Rosa Garcia is cooking with what first looks like mirrors. These solar stoves are made of reflective myar panels which harness the sun’s heat to cook. She uses this method as a sustainable alternative to gas and firewood. For Rosa, she’s been cooking like this for 5 years, and it has a lot of practical benefits. I avoid spending on gas and firewood, especially because last year there was a severe fire in our mountain. So collecting firewood is hard, even though the mountain is very large. But we don’t have to do it. This way we don’t inhale smoke and we protect the environment. Rosa and the other indigenous women in her community are part of a growing grassroots movement known as Coachinera Solaris or Solar Cooks. The initiative is led by environmental activist Lorenna Harp. We can use this extreme sun we are feeling right now and every sunny day to our advantage. That way we are saving fossil fuels and we also counteracting global warming by making use of it. The popularity of these stoves is increasing. The project has reached 500 women across more than 50 communities in the state of Waka.

In Mexico, a grassroots environmental initiative to use solar power to cook is increasing in popularity. Environmental activist Lorena Harp set up “Cocineras Solares”, or Solar Cooks, in the state of Oaxaca. It promotes clean energy, health, and environmental protection. So far, the project has reached 500 women across more than 50 communities in the state.

  1. The fact that the person narrating doesn’t bother to pronounce the project properly is a real let down considering the source of this reporting . She actually say, “cochineras” which sounds much like the word pigsty. Bother to ask Google to pronounce it for before recording. It’s not that hard.

  2. This is amazing, but sadly the rich using private planes to travel all over the world and also regular people who use airplanes brings so much more pollution the problem is not the poor

  3. In the first second of the video you can also see a solar water heater with hi-tech evacuated collector tubes on the right. Free hot water for your home, but I guess that wasn't interesting enough 🙂

  4. its necessity not by choice nor is it the environmental green bullcrap …
They cant afford electricity due to the sudden rise of mexican citizens send back from the US.

  5. If people who, realistically, are not really part of tue probpem are puttijg so much effort into tryojg to be part of the sokution, surely the developed world could follow suit and do the same.

  6. Sorry to say this won't gain much attention globally, especially in the US they want you to keep using gas…..Especially when it's winter the bill charge will be triple what you usually pay.
