OTTAWA | TRADITIONAL, UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHNAABEG PEOPLE – Prime Minister Carney was in Terrace, B.C. to announce the fast-tracking of several emissions intensive “nation building” projects as other world leaders are meeting in Belém, Brazil at the COP30 climate conference to reduce global emissions despite him.

Scaling up Canada’s clean energy grid and building out renewable energy infrastructure  – assuming they’re done under Indigenous and environmentally protective oversight –  activate the “legacy” of innovation needed to economically future-proof the country against an unwieldy LNG market while tackling runaway climate change.

Fast-tracking the Ksi Lisims LNG terminal, however, will drive up climate-killing methane emissions while putting billions in the pockets of MAGA-linked private equity firms. Projects like the North Coast Transmission Line are a muili-billion dollar corporate subsidy for the LNG terminals it will supply, while increasing the energy bill of everyone else in B.C.

Polling consistently shows British Columbians and Canadians overwhelmingly oppose using tax dollars to subsidize fossil fuels, including LNG infrastructure.

Regarding the Ksi Lisims terminal expansion, which has already been approved, Richard Brooks, Climate Finance Director with Stand.earth, said:

“As the world gathers for COP30 , it’s embarrassing that Canada is still backing polluting megaprojects like Ksi Lisims LNG that guarantee climate chaos while trampling on Indigenous rights. The International Energy Agency has made it clear: the fossil fuel era is ending, and projects of national interest must build climate resilience — not a billionaire-backed fossil dystopia. Ksi Lisims is a project of National Liability and makes no financial or legal sense. Carney’s government should expect challenges from all sides.”

Regarding the North Coast Transmission Line, Sven Biggs, Oil and Gas Campaign Director with Stand.earth said:

“The North Coast Transmission line – designed to re-direct clean electricity to LNG export terminals in the Great Bear Rainforest – will force taxpayers and BC Hydro ratepayers to pay the costs of fossil fuel extraction, whether they want to or not.”

Regarding Prime Minister Carney’s claims of a 60% increase in global demand for LNG, which  appeared to reference a recent report from oil giant Shell, Kiki Wood, Senior Campaigner with Stand.earth said:

“I would advise the Prime Minister to not take his cues regarding global LNG demand from the fossil fuel industry. Big Oil propaganda has guided policy for long enough. Just a few days ago the International Energy Agency – who doesn’t have to spin for any shareholders – made clear that we are headed towards a supply glut of LNG in the global market.” [1]
