As far I can recall, it was named as such to be distinguished from some place in France or something that was also called Britain
Ah yes, my homeland: Slightly Bigger Brittany
You should have a picture of Donald Trump here, getting his Peace Prize from FIFA.
Like the U.S. being ‘United’ I suppose 😂
It’s the Greater part of the British Isles and named by the Romans.
Also Brittany in France was little Britain.
Doh!
It’s the biggest island in the British Isles ergo it’s called Great Britain
Yet we’re still not on par with USA.
World series NFL where only USA are present is literally kim jong un energy of sports.

It’s geography.
Great Britain is the bigger island.
The other island is Britain and contains Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The British Isles refers (mainly) to Great Britain (bigger island) and Lesser Britain (Ireland, smaller island). As Ireland doesn’t want to be known as Lesser Britain that name was lost to history a very long time ago.
edit: little Britain not lesser Britain
Well it fucking was
It’s not a conceit thing it’s just referring to the collection of islands, a greater geographical area, rather than Britain being better than everyone else, that part is just a coincidence.
A geography dodging Seppo definitely made this meme.
Pity he can’t speak French or German. It would give him an idea of the meaning of Great Britain as in Big Britain as the largest island. There is also a connect between Brittany and Britain with Breton calling their land Breizh and Britain is Breizh Veur or big Britain. In Gaidhlig Brittany is A’ Bhreatainn Bheag or little Britain.
It has got sfa to do with it being really good.
America calling itself United
Too many posts on here are from non-brits with shitty anti-british nonsense. Might as well just rename the sub to r/ShittyAmericanMemes or something.
Great Britain refers to the geographical location. The country itself is named after the geographical location that it exists on.
Although, if there’s any country on planet earth that deserves the title of great, it’s the United Kingdom.
*”All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system and public health, what have the ~~Romans~~ British ever done for us?”*
It’s great as in greater.
Great is short for greater, as in all of the islands including the Hebrides, channel etc. the England, Scotland and whales bit is just Britain. When you add in Northern Ireland and all the other bits it’s greater Britain.
“Great Britain” means the larger Britain: the big island containing England, Scotland, and Wales, as opposed to the smaller Brittany in France (sometimes called “Little Britain” or *Petite Bretagne*, in contrast to *Grande-Bretagne*).
Canaria naming itself “Gran” Canaria
Absolutely thick as shit take 👍🏻
Only a massive cretin would think it was named ‘Great’ for this reason…
Great means big. Great Britain basically means ‘the big one of the British isles’.
Great as in large not as in wonderful. Get an education.
why is this still a joke, its a quantitative thing guys not qualitative. so bored of this hack joke
Don’t forget the French call France, The France. In case you confuse it with another France.
It’s the name of the main island, the largest in the British Isles
