Hungary had to hang tough, but they ultimately dug out a hard-fought 1-0 win against Armenia in Yerevan which means the Republic of Ireland must win in Budapest on Sunday to snatch a World Cup play-off spot.

The Boys in Green were hoping Armenia could do them a favour by at least taking a point against Hungary.

Instead, Barnabas Varga’s 33rd-minute header proved enough to give the visitors a massive three points.

That meant Ireland required at least a draw against Portugal at the Aviva Stadium to stay in the hunt for second place in the group.

They delievered against the odds, Troy Parrott’s brace sinking the fancied visitors who had Cristiano Ronaldo sent off before the hour mark.

The Boys in Green now must beat the Hungarians on their own patch to make it to the play-offs.

It’s a massive challenge, and one that will require another huge performance. However, Ireland are at least still in the hunt having looked dead and buried at the start of this international window.
