A City of Hamilton crossing guard is dead after being hit by a dump truck on Thursday afternoon.
Hamilton police said the collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Mohawk Road and Upper Wentworth Street.
The crossing guard, a 52-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The circumstances that led to the collision are unknown.
Police said the driver of the truck remained at the scene.
The Ministry of Labour has been notified and will conduct a separate investigation, police said.
“This incident has had a significant impact on our community. Crossing guards play a vital role in protecting children and supporting safe school routes, and the loss of a community member performing this important work is deeply felt,” police said.
“Hamilton Police Service extends our condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues, and the broader Hamilton community as we grieve together.”

The intersection was closed for several hours while the investigation at the scene was ongoing.
Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she was “heartbroken” and extended her deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, co-workers and “everyone touched by this terrible loss.”
“This tragedy is a devastating reminder of how fragile life is and how important it is that we all look out for one another on our roads,” the mayor said.
“Everyone – whether driving, walking, or cycling – has a role to play in keeping our community safe.”
