Does anyone know the real reason to score soda bread? Irish-American posting that the tradition is to let the fairies out…

  1. Helps get an even bake and increases surface area of crispy bits. The one in your picture looks shite.

    We tell the yanks it’s to let the faeries out because they’ll believe anything.

  2. Bread is scored to allow the bread to expand in a more uniform fashion. Without scoring, the bread will find a weak point and expand into a blob

  3. If you don’t score it the bread just breaks open at random.

    Also it’s ireland, we put crosses on everything for the baby jebus

  4. According to my mother (a chef), it’s to control how it rises and crusts. According to someone on the radio a couple of days ago, it’s to stop an air bubble forming in the middle.

  5. Steam and gasses build up inside and the bread expands. If it’s not scored it will break open in a random place uncontrolled, and not expand to its full potential thus staying dense in parts.
    Every region has their favorite scoring pattern, Irish just love crosses.

    I do wonder why the yanks have a completely different version of Irish history aka tradition than reality. Must of been all the lads emigrating over to america getting shit faced the whole time, talking out there arse to their kids or something like this.

    Its almost like you have 3 types of Irish people, Those from Ireland, Those from Northern Ireland, trying to hold onto some sort of long lost Aran island type Gaeltacht Ireland and then the yanks who believe in some sort of charlie and the chocolate factory Ireland with leprechauns, fairy’s and shamrocks.
