% of population that thinks their country has benefited from being a member of the EU

  1. Huge denialism and a shitty tabloid media together with a dangerously large far right are causing this in Austria.

    Source: Am Austrian.

  2. all in all good ratings I would say.

last 15 years were a complete shitshow (banking crisis, immigrant crisis, covid, rising nationalism/right wingers, ukraine war)

  3. Lithuania is shouting from their windows just to make sure that little bit of Russia knows how happy they are to be in the EU.

  4. Got to be honest, 73% is kind of a bit less than I expected for Germany, I assume we’d be breaking 80, but I guess that’s my bubble showing.

Also kind of shocked at Italy and France there.

Austria, not so much. The countrie’s run by tabloids, more or less.

  5. Every year that passes brings us closer together more marriages between European s more business transactions between governments more properties bought in a neighbouring country more Erasmus experiences realising that stereotypes about others aren’t always correct

Plus Russian financial troubles should make them less influential in terms of ability to fund divisive anti EU and Europe media

  6. I think, with all the crises that the EU has experienced in the 21st century, this is pretty good.

I also find it fascinating that there is no clear east/west, north/south or rich/poor-pattern in approval ratings.

  7. I would say that in Portugal this is a lot because the EU has forced us to have much better laws and regulations – we basically got pulled 10-20 years into the future in things like consumer and environmental protections.

I don’t even think it’s about the money: most of the money from the EU seems to be wasted and ends up in a tiny number of pockets.

  8. Ireland would not be the country it is today without the EU, that’s a fact. Our partners in Europe have given us so much and we (the majority) are so grateful for that fact too.

  9. IMO I don’t think Spain benefits a lot from being a EU member at all. With a large wave of immigration flowing, Spain’s population has grown rapidly than once imagined, and this will become an obstacle for increasing GDP per capita. Depopulation shall be a nice choice for improving GDP per capita, hence the number of immigration must be controlled. I don’t think a country with massive plateau land should contain densed population, the land of New Zealand is much better than Spain with only 5 million habitants.

  10. What’s up with Austria? What’s the reason behind it?

Also: There are 8% in Luxembourg who think they have not benefited from being a member of the EU? Like, for real?

  11. People might be wondering why Ireland is so high.

Well there’s a lot to it which is impossible to cover in Reddit but the short of it is this.

    1) We never experienced the Industrial Revolution to the same degree as many others did. Dublin and Belfast could be argued as the only parts to have really experienced it but in a smaller degree than the UK. We were the farm of the empire.

    2) because of this and other smaller reasons, we never got off the ground. Infrastructure wasn’t build in ireland. The investment across the new republic was very low.

    3) We were the poorest European nation outside of the iron curtain at the time.

    4) Upon joining the EU we started to boom over the years. Even during recession, we were still growing, investment was growing. Education was booming. Everything was flying off the handle during the Celtic tiger. Including our lower tax rate and (originally) cheaper labour force we became the main EU HQ for so many US companies. Still are in many cases.

    5) When the collapse happened, anti EU sentiment did grow. I remember many people, media outlets and public figures starting to question the EU. But this didn’t last long and died off.

    7) And the final reason, brexit. Since 2016 we’ve seen our support for the EU only grow more as the EU has taken a public stance to protect ireland from brexit fallout. While British commentators couldn’t figure out (and still can’t) why ireland doesn’t want to be economically hurt by their actions. It’s been a fun ride seeing British figures find out that ireland is not in the UK and others who want us to leave the EU too because they would help us. Remember we were the farm of the empire? Yeah none of us want that kinda treatment again.

All in all. The EU has problems. But it’s safe to say. We think it’s fairly class to be in.
