Retrofitting Listed Council Flats Cheaper Than New Build, Pilot Suggests

  1. I’m more shocked to learn that some of those flats are protected structures. I lived next to Pearse House for a time and it’s a fucking pit. Sometimes it looks like some filing cabinet of misery straight out of Judge Dredd.

Architects in Ireland are obsessed with preserving “modernist/brutalist” structures, and maybe this makes me a philistine but I just think they’re eyesores.

I’d be popping a bottle of champagne too if Busáras were to collapse in on itself. Despite what architecture students might think.

  2. It’s what they should have done in Ballymun to be honest. It’s still as unpleasant a place to live as it was before all the flats were demolished, so that clearly wasn’t the issue. If the council had instead rehoused people like they did but renovated the towers then the town would probably be in a better position than it currently is.
