Finland’s national team head coach Jakob Friis shared his thoughts on the unexpected defeat in the World Cup qualifying stage. His team suffered a 0-1 loss to Malta, which handed the “minnows” their first victory in the competition.
“It is hard to comprehend how we couldn’t score a goal. We had so many opportunities, while they?
Just one or two chances. Compared to the first match, we had significantly more scoring opportunities.
But football is such a game. We won our first game, and now we have faced defeat.
This situation is what disappoints me the most,” Friis said in an interview with YLE. The coach also added that despite the result, his players performed well, with the sole issue being their inability to capitalize on their chances.
Finland finished this group stage in third place with 10 points. Poland collected 14 points, while the Netherlands topped the group with 17 points.
Malta ended the competition with 5 points, and Lithuania collected 3 points.
