Colombia President Petro floats union with Venezuela amid U.S. military buildup

1. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has suggested recreating Gran Colombia – the early 19th Century country that included modern day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama – on multiple occasions over the weekend. The South American leader made the comments in response to Washington’s ongoing strike campaign on vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, which has killed more than 70 people accused of trafficking drugs.

   Petro said a union may be the only way to counter U.S. aggression in the region, which has dialed up pressure on Caracas and Bogotá.

2. Man who’s biblically unpopular, and who going to be out of office within 9 months, replaced by someone who is almost certainly going to be to the right of him politically… says things.

3. He’s a full-time diplomatic drama queen, and the media can’t resist rewarding his tantrums with wall-to-wall attention.

4. Memo to Gustavo Pedro: EU has a mutual defence clause. I’d be interested to see Colombia defend Venezuela if the US did actually invade.
