Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket deploys Mars satellites, sticks booster landing • FRANCE 24 English

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] At 17 stories tall, getting New Glenn off the launch pad is no mean feat. But now Jeff Bezos Space Company has done it for a second time. Then came the party trick. Its first stage booster detached and landed on a barge in the ocean to be reused. An exploit until now only achieved by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX, which has done it hundreds of times. As for New Glenn’s mission, it successfully deployed two NASA probes into orbit before they boost off to Mars in 2 years time. NASA’s twin Escapade spacecraft will study space weather at Mars to better understand the red planet’s history and how to protect future explorers. Where is it? Until recently, Blue Origin has mostly been known for space tourism flights. But the success of the multi-billion dollar New Glenn is another step in its race to catch up with SpaceX, which has dominated rocket launchers for years. At stake is a prized role in the first crude moon landing since 1972. SpaceX’s massive Starship has been awarded the mission, but last month NASA reopened the contract, citing concerns about the pace of its development. It leaves an opening for New Glenn, which as it stands will be used for the third of the planned moon landings.
