MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian national football team have earned their first point in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, BelTA has learned.
In their fifth-round match, Carlos Alos’ squad played to a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen against Denmark, one of the Group C favorites. The hosts immediately applied heavy pressure and took the lead in the 11th minute with a spectacular strike from Mikkel Damsgaard. The game flipped in the second half: in the 62nd minute, Valery Gromyko beat several opponents on a counter-attack to equalize, and just three minutes later, Nikita Demchenko scored a second goal past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. After conceding twice, the Danes regained the initiative, and Gustav Isaksen soon leveled the score at 2-2. In the first round of the current tournament, the Belarusians had lost to Denmark 0-6.
Elsewhere, Greece defeated Scotland 3-2 in Piraeus. The group standings after five rounds are as follows: Denmark – 11 points, Scotland – 10, Greece – 6, Belarus – 1.
The final matches will be played on 18 November. Belarus will face Greece in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, while Scotland will host Denmark in Glasgow.
The winners of the 12 European qualification groups will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup finals. The teams that finish in second place will compete in the play-offs.
