Celtic’s players will be involved in an almighty showdown on Tuesday.

That’s after incredible drama in Athens and Copenhagen on Saturday saw Denmark blow the chance to secure their place at the World Cup.

Kasper Schmeichel was furious after the Danes let Scotland off the hook by remarkably failing to beat Belarus, despite winning 6-0 against them in the return fixture.

This has set up what is effectively a one-match play-off in Glasgow, where the winner goes to the World Cup. In the event of a draw, Denmark go through.

And the drama has continued into Sunday, with news of an extraordinary situation in the Denmark squad now emerging.

Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel and Denmark teammates in ‘isolation’

Denmark boss Brian Riemer has revealed that his squad are managing an illness which ruled players out for the Belarus game.

Given the magnitude of Tuesday’s game, it couldn’t be worse timing for them.

Speaking to the press, Riemer addressed the situation which has seen his squad enter isolation as a precaution against the virus spreading.

He said: “Right now we have Joachim Andersen who is sick and we have (Rasmus) Hojlund who is sick. And a staff member who is sick.

“We are in a situation where the doctor is on it.

“Is it a worry ahead of Scotland? Yes. If you ask me if I would have wished that there had been no illness today and that there also wasn’t on Tuesday, then of course that’s the answer.

“Our medical staff are doing everything possible to limit it.

“This is the kind of thing that can happen. We have used hand sanitizer and now in this case isolation.

“It is part of the procedure, so to speak.”

Given the length of Celtic’s absentee list, Martin O’Neill (or Wilfried Nancy) will be hoping that Schmeichel can stay healthy ahead of Celtic’s clash with St Mirren on Saturday.

His number two, fellow Scandinavian Viljami Sinisalo, was involved in Finland’s 1-0 defeat to Malta on Friday.
