Military Watch says a US B-52H near Russia’s Arctic, escorted by Finnish F-18s in Bomber Task Force Europe 26-1, signals NATO’s role after Finland’s accession.
U. S. Air Force has moved a B-52H strategic bomber toward Russia’s Arctic frontier, according to observers at the American outlet Military Watch Magazine. The aircraft flew the route under escort from Finnish F-18 fighters, a pairing the authors say turned a routine patrol into a coordinated showcase of NATO capabilities in the High North. The flight formed part of the Bomber Task Force Europe 26–1 program and, as presented by the alliance, signaled that after Finland’s entry into NATO its northern territories now fall within the nuclear forces’ area of responsibility.
The observers note that, despite its age, the B-52H remains a pillar of U.S. strategic aviation. The U. S. Air Force fields five squadrons of these bombers. The platform is described as highly versatile and compatible with a broad range of modern long-range missiles.
They add that delays in bringing the new B-21 into service, technical issues affecting the small B-2 fleet, and the drawdown of B-1B aircraft have pushed demand for the B-52 higher than ever.
