Israel bill to allow death penalty for ‘terrorists’ passes first vote in parliament • FRANCE 24

39 in favor, 16 against, no abstensions. Limited applause on the floor of the Knesset after an initial vote on a bill which would mandate the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of murdering Israelis. The amendment to Israel’s penal code put forward by the country’s national security minister. Itar Bengavir was visibly pleased after the text initial reading was passed as he handed out sweets to lawmakers. Everybody knows one thing that if this bill passes, it would be the most important law in Israel’s history. Every terrorist would know and the terror supporters who were here know as well what this bill would determine. On Monday, Israeli opposition lawmakers boycotted the vote in parliament. Israel abolished the death penalty for murder in 1954 and since then the only person executed in the country was an architect of the Holocaust. Ben Gver argues the measure will help deter a future October 7th style attack. He had threatened to pull his part support from the governing coalition if a vote didn’t go through. Palestinian authorities meanwhile have reacted to the latest move from Israel with the foreign ministry saying the new law was a new form of Israeli extremism. The bill next moves to a parliamentary committee for further debate before a second and third vote in the Knesset. However, if it does become law, it casts doubt on future prisoner release deals as some of the Palestinians handed back under the current ceasefire agreement with Hamas were convicted of serious crimes, including murder.

A bill proposing the death penalty for “terrorists” passed a first reading in Israel’s parliament on Monday (November 10)– a measure that could apply to Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks against Israelis.

  1. This piece is absurd. A first reading means absolutely nothing. It's the Israeli equivalent to a US politician just submitting a bill.

  2. We know what the agenda of israel they want to erase the palestine and take over next to the neigboring area goodluck to middle east countries if the israel exist .many years past you become israel and american slave mark my word

  3. This apparently only applies to Palestinians, but not to Israelis convicted of the same crime. Israel is digging its own hole deeper with this.

  4. Imagine that, using our goodness against us, and being concerned that future negotiations, won't have leverage. I love it! Let them all go now into the tunnels, before filling them with water or concrete, as a precursor to future dealings
