Ukraine suspends justice minister amid energy corruption probe • FRANCE 24 English

bundles of cash allegedly embezzled from Ukraine’s energy sector. The country’s anti-corruption agencies busted a highlevel criminal network involved in a $100 million corruption scheme. Among them is Ukraine’s justice minister Gman Galushanka, also former energy minister, who was suspended after a recorded conversation with him and the suspects was released. He is accused of accepting personal benefits in exchange for control of money flow in the energy sector. The mastermind of this scheme is Timur Mind, a close ally of President Zilinski. According to the investigators, Tim Mesh decided to take advantage of the situation in Ukraine, of his friendly relations with the president and his connections with senior government officials to enrich himself illegally. Mindic is believed to have fled the country, but President Zilinsk’s relationship with him is likely to come under renewed scrutiny. The 15-month investigation into the energy sector led to five people being arrested and seven charged on Tuesday. The government sacked the supervisory board of the nuclear power provider Inyergatam, believed by investigators to be a cornerstone of the graft scheme. Prosecutors accuse Anerga Atam of forcing contractors to pay illegal kickback fees and say several top officials benefited from this. The scandal, which comes at a time of escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, is likely to heat pressure on Vladimir Zalinski. The president already came under fire earlier this year when he tried to limit the power of Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies before eventually backing down following mass protests and backlash from the EU.

The Ukrainian government has suspended Justice Minister German Galushchenko as part of an ongoing investigation into corruption in the energy sector. Anti-corruption prosecutors have charged seven individuals, including Timur Mindich, a close ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky, accused of orchestrating a $100 million corruption scheme.
