Russia’s ‘Doomsday Radio’ has singled out a NATO state in what could be seen as a threat to the alliance in a fresh burst of coded messages.
One of the messages broadcast by Vladimir Putin’s mysterious radio station simply read LATVIA – the allied state which shares a 170-mile border with Russia. Latvia, along with its neighbours Estonia and Lithuania are all seen as vulnerable to Russian invasion.
If Russia were to invade, NATO’s article 5 would be triggered, and likely, World War 3. The Cold War relic station has been on air for half a century, and usually just transmits buzzing sounds – leading to its nickname ‘The Buzzer’.

But, there are time that it crackles into life and begins transmitting coded messages, often at times of high tension in the world. Today at least seven coded messages were heard, one of which was Latvia.
Today’s messages were: NZHTI NZHTI 15854 LATVIA 5894 4167. The message, which was the sixth message broadcast on Monday, was caught on recording.
The shortwave radio messages are believed to be broadcast by Russian Strategic Forces networks, which are linked to Putin’s nuclear strike capability. The exact purposes of the messages, though, are not clear, sparking multiple conspiracy theories.
Other codewords heard today included NANTOTYUK, LAST, BOLONSKIY, GALVANIZER, and DRAW, Bolonskiy translates to bologne. But it was the LATVIA message that triggered a whole host of speculation online.
“Can Latvia be erased from maps?? Has it started!!????” asked one person. Another Russian commenter demanded: “We should also add Estonia and Lithuania.”
“There’ll soon be another SVO [war], only this time in the Baltics,” one speculated. While another said: “Latvia – consultation on NATO Article 5.”
“There have been so many messages today, even I am worried about the Lavtians now,” one said. The ‘threat’ to the NATO state came days after the Doomsday station went quiet, apparently after a drone attack on the power station used to supply its electricity.
In October the station sprange to life with another series of coded messages. The latest messages were believed to be potentially related to the Grom-2025, or Thunder-2025, missile drills that were expected.
The codes issued in October said: NZhTI 33438 DON QUIXOTE 1745 1643 and NZhTI 34948 DYROKOL 0091 5671. The meaning of Dyrokol is Hole Punch. A third coded message today stated: NZhTI 07377 POSAZHENY 9051 8779. The meaning of this is a person who replaces the parents of the groom or the bride in a folk wedding ceremony
