WASHINGTON (TNDD) — President Donald Trump called Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz a good friend amid reports that he will potentially run for president in 2028.

“It’s a little early,” Trump said, answering a question in response to Cruz potentially running for president.

“It’s three and a quarter years (away). That’s a long time. “But he’s a very good guy. He is a very good friend of mine.”

He also said he wasn’t surprised to hear of Cruz trying to run for president again, according to USA Today.

The news outlet Axios reported on Monday that Cruz was laying groundwork to run for president in 2028.

This report comes after his ongoing feud with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on the issue of Israel. Cruz is very pro-Israel and its relationship with the U.S. whereas Carlson has been critical of the Israeli government, specifically of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Carlson is an ally of J.D. Vance who appears to be the frontrunner to win the GOP presidential primary in 2028.

Carlson’s son Buckley works for Vance and the vice president defended his staffer after a journalist asked if he was also a bigot after saying that Carlson’s brother is a fan of far-right commentator Nick Fuentes.

“Today, we learned that Tucker Carlson’s brother idolizes Nick Fuentes,” journalist Sloan Rachmuth wrote on over the weekend. “Racism and antisemitism is a Carlson family trait. Is Tucker’s son Buckley, who serves as JD Vance’s top aide also a vile bigot?”

Vance defended Buckley on X in response.

“Sloan Rachmuth is a “journalist” who has decided to obsessively attack a staffer in his 20s because she doesn’t like the views of his father,” Vance said. “Every time I see a public attack on Buckley it’s a complete lie. And yes, I notice ever[y] person with an agenda who unfairly attacks a good guy who does a great job for me.”
