Irish Times reporter Naomi O’Leary lays out the web of authoritarian/fascist influence (Russia, Belarus, Syria, China) on Members of European Parliament Clare Daly and Mick Wallace.

  1. A year ago I began wondering: what happens in Syrian media when Mick Wallace and Clare Daly speak in support of viewpoints held by the Assad regime?
I set up an alert for their names when used in Arabic, Russian and Chinese.
Follow me down the rabbit hole:

  2. It’s one thing being anti-NATO and anti-West and supporting Russia and China, it’s another when you drop everything to go and support fringe far right politicians in in small eastern European countries that you have no connection with. That is dodgy AF.

  3. Why do these 2 get so much media coverage? Right wingers don’t like them because of their hatred of the USA and Israel . And anyone on the left has nothing to do with them because they are embarrassing, they aren’t influencing anyone, So why the media hysteria about them?

  4. Even before this they were talking about the “children of Donbass”, doing apologetics for the Assad regime and saying the Uyghur genocide was US state propaganda. Clowns

  5. We have always been a soft target for Russian influence. Small country in the EU with an endemic bigotry against our closest neighbor and ally. I would be surprised their active measures against us were so limited.

  6. I had always put Daly down as a true believer of anti-Americanism – and while I didn’t entirely agree with her – it was reasonable that the viewpoint was being expressed and questions asked about decisions made.

It’s fairly obvious those views were being used by other anti American groups – including some odious governments. If they are actually getting paid for those comments – that puts a massively different spin on things.

  7. Jesus Christ. Will never take a word out of their mouths seriously again.

I have a question though. Is Russia Today and (RT) the same entity? Francis Higgins (The Viper from Hardy Bucks) did some World News stories/comedy bits with them for a while there too on YouTube.

Was he just unaware of what they represented at the time or is he a part of this shit show too?

Because that would really disappoint me, I couldn’t give two shits about Clare Daly or Mick Wallace, their politics were never really taken seriously by Irish people anyways.

But a popular public figure like Francis Higgins, someone who’s just seen as an entertainer really, is a different story altogether as he arguably has more influence over people’s views here than the other two gobshites do.

  8. Honestly r/ireland should launch a viral campaign come the next EU elections to make sure these 2 useful idiots don’t get back into the EU parliment. We don’t need our own Farages misrepresenting us.

  9. Haha what’s with the pearl clutching if someone appears on Chinese TV? I mean like just say you with your chest you want the CCP out and hate China.

  10. Just because they are featured on the news in dodgy regions, does that really make them complicit?

    Well, yes also.

  11. People moaning about this being a repost. I missed it on here and in the newspaper at the time so I’m glad it’s posted again. If even just for this:

    >… marvelled Petras Austrevicius, a liberal Lithuanian MEP.
“Those two Irish people are absolutely involved on the wrong side of history,” he added. “Keep them in Ireland.”

  12. Check out the serial shit stirrer Ewan Mckennas love in with them on twitter. Another gobshite with a right-wing crackpot following

  13. From the very moment the voted against the first few sanctions that had overwhelming support I knew they were scum. It was amazing how some people crawled out of the woodwork to spout whataboutism in their defense parroting their Wallace and Daly’s arguments. When that didn’t work they started accusing people of falling for “propeganda” as if there some worthwhile nuance to their reasons for objecting to the sanctions.

  14. Oust the tankie cunts I say, anyone who claims they’re socialist but openly wank off to authoritarian countries like Russia or China are really just showing themselves as being red fascists. I don’t want these people representing me.
