Henderson County Schools said that a natural gas smell was detected at North Middle School and the Central Office on Tuesday morning.

Staff and students were safely evacuated, according to a news release. Buses transported students to a safe location off campus.

The Henderson Fire Department was on scene and responded to the situation at about 9:54 a.m. Tuesday, according to Assistant Chief Willy Curry.

Curry said the fire department and Henderson Gas Utility surveyed the scene and didn’t find anything suspicious. He added students and staff returned to the school and Central Office about an hour after evacuation.

School officials said that once the scene was clear, students returned and have resumed a normal school day.
