New coin honours Queen front man Freddie Mercury • FRANCE 24 English

An unforgettable performance pressed into history. Freddy Mercury has been commemorated on a new collectible coin by the Royal Mint. It features an image of the Queen frontman head thrown back and holding the microphone stand mid-p performance. An iconic image from the band’s 1968 performance at Wembley Stadium. Mercury’s sister visited the Royal Mint to strike the first coin herself. Well, as Freddy died young, he didn’t get the chance of being awarded a royal medal uh for his uh talents in the music world. So, to have a royal coin this way is wonderful and very fitting. [Music] The coin’s release coincides with the 40th anniversary of Queen’s 1985 Live Aid performance and his solo studio album, Mr. Bad Guy. This coin is designed fantastically and it has such amazing details on there like a musical stay that represents the four octave vocal range. There’s also the studded armband represented there. Mercury died in 1991 at 45 years old, just one day after he publicly announced he was HIV positive. Well, Freddy was always my brother, and uh I wish he was still around now, but it wasn’t meant to be, but it’s lovely that people that I meet always say favorable things about my brother. So, I’m so pleased that he’s still remembered after all these years. The coin is the latest addition to the Royal Mint Music Legends series, which has previously honored David Bowie, Elton John, and George Michael. It is available to buy from Monday.
