A federal judge on Wednesday blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary deportation protections and work permits for more than 6,100 Syrians while a lawsuit challenging the move plays out.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla in Manhattan said the administration’s plan to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Syrians was likely unlawful, siding with seven migrants who argued the decision was arbitrary and fueled by racial animus. Her order prevents the policy from taking effect Friday and allows the administration to appeal immediately.

Failla, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, issued the ruling during a virtual hearing.
