The Hungarian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) announced it would cease operations at midnight on November 21 – five years after its restart aimed at delivering independent and accurate news for the Hungarian audience.
In its statement, the service said that it had “diligently worked to provide independent journalism for the audience in Hungary”.

The Hungarian service was relaunched in 2020 at the direction of the United States Congress. Prior to that, it operated from 1950 to 1993.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Voice of America, and other U.S. international broadcasters, notified Congress on November 5 of its intention to discontinue the Hungarian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The cessation takes effect on November 21, 2025.
