London’s National COVID Memorial Wall to Be Permanently preserved.

The government plans to officially preserve the National Covid Memorial Wall in Lambeth which was created as a grassroots project by campaigners during the March 2021 lockdown.

The Wall spans 540 metres and features over 250,000 hand-painted red hearts.

Each heart commemorates a loved one.

City News spoke to the volunteers about the announcement who have been caring for the wall for the past five years.

  1. Finally they’re doing something we can all agree with.

  2. Good, I do hope it will actually encourage future governments to do better next pandemic and maintain ongoing preparedness methods.

  3. Yeah it should be, COVID was a massive event that effected the globe, if we collectively forget about it then no lessons will have been learnt.

  4. Government corruption and incompetence cost thousands of lives.

  5. Curious how this will be preserved as surely the paint will fade and disappear over time. Could they laminate it some how with varnish?

  6. Preserving it as is would be less good than actually listing all those who died properly on it.

  7. Hope they do one for all the people that got and are still getting long covid.

    Some things to know:

    * About 10% of covid infections cause long covid, including repeat infections (source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-022-00846-2 also the World Health Organisation says it: https://www.who.int/europe/news-room/fact-sheets/item/post-covid-19-condition)

    * Anyone can get long covid, regardless of age or previous health (source: a third of people with long covid had no pre-existing conditions, the peak ages to get it are 30-50 https://collections.nlm.nih.gov/catalog/nlm:nlmuid-9918504887106676-pdf)

    * It’s lifelong for most. Similar diseases caused by other viruses are generally lifelong.

    * There is no cure. The NHS has absolutely no treatments to offer people who get long covid.

The best way of dealing with long covid is to not catch covid (again) i.e. zero covid.

Covid never ended. People stopped caring because of political and social reasons only. The ongoing public health crisis from long covid is being ignored similar to how HIV/AIDS was being ignored in the 80s.

  8. This is good news. It should remain as a permanent memorial to all of those who lost their lives to the terrible disease. And remain a permanent reminder to society, current and future generations as to the fragility and precious quality of life and human beings.

  9. I walk past this every Tuesday, a great reminder of how we all persevered through that challenging time and how unfortunately our corrupt gov partied away and ate cake.
