Canadian PM passes first budget: Mark Carney’s relied on opposition support or abstentions

A vote in Canada’s Parliament brings relief to Prime Minister Mark Carney. By just two votes, the House of Commons passed his contentious budget, saving the government in the process. Carney aims to double Canada’s deficit to stimulate the economy in the face of Donald Trump’s tariffs. He says Washington’s tariffs and the uncertainty they’ve generated will cost Ottawa about 1.8% 28% of GDP. And if we don’t act now, these losses will only grow. The United States has changed. That’s their right. We must respond. The right-wing opposition have decrieded the government’s measure as a credit card budget. While the left says it doesn’t do enough to help workers who have lost their jobs because of the tariffs. Carney’s minority Liberal government needed the support or abstension of several opposition members to get the budget through. and to spare the country’s snap elections, which the majority of Canadians say they do not want.

Canada’s parliament has narrowly approved a contentious budget, ensuring the political survival of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who relied on opposition support or abstentions to see the bill through. Carney argues the budget is essential to stimulate the economy and cushion the impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs. Julien Dubois and Oliver Farry report.

  1. That Country of Canada is going to be a superpower in the next 10 years or less. They haven't even begun to dig up all those resources that we need in the EU. Good for them.

  2. 1.8% of GDP? Well, 80% of GDP is spent and consumed by 20% of the population, so raise their taxes 2%. Boom, problem solved.

  3. Terrible people! Lying to our faces as they keep deepening their pockets. Talking about doing good for the earth and bla bla bla…

  4. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Liberal, Conservative, NDP, or Bloc supporter—the results under the current Prime Minister are clear. You can see them with every purchase you make, whether it’s groceries, vehicles, or buying a home. Everything has become more expensive due to inflation. The lack of jobs is apparent as well, along with long hospital wait times, and the list goes on due to high immigration.
All voters need to hold the current Prime Minister and their party accountable. When a party in power is continually voted in, they begin to feel safe—and when they feel safe, they no longer work for the people, but for their own agenda. It’s not good for any one party to feel that secure. People need to vote for themselves, not for what mainstream media tells them.

It’s time for people to set favourite party colours aside and start voting for the results they’re seeing out in public not what mainstream tells you from the party’s who pay them.

  5. Well we can sure see where Canadian cencership I coming in I'll comments shut off on major Canadian news outlets. So let me just say if any Canadian anyone made a budget that goes in the red guess what would happen yup so why can the government make a budget with money they don't have this is not a budget it's borrowing money you don't have why can't I or any Canadian make a budget like that. When the banks want there money why can't I say go ask the government to pay you they do it and it seems OK for everyone but that's now it works.
