Ironic that she was pro-censorship when so much of today’s censorious behaviour comes from the left.
It’s the left now who police language and artistic intent
She well dead chum, you can let it go now.
I remember reading the magazine that she published. Big fan.
Oh, sorry, that was David Sullivan.
Good meme
Hey you Whitehouse, haha charade you are. You radiate cold shafts of broken glass
I only know about her from that pink floyd song that goes “…ha ha, charade you are.”
Her war on Doctor Who forced the show to change its time in the 70s
Having a porn mag that had the UK’s first hamburger shots named after her was a highlight.
Misplaced moralistic, overbearing Karen maybe, but alt right grifter doesn’t fit. I believe she was absolutely genuine in her single-issue crusade, believed fully in it and wasn’t in it to extract personal income from those who agreed with her. That’s how it seemed to me at the time anyway.
Isn’t that Dick Emery “oooh you are awful, but I like you”?
I do! She managed to find the filth in EVERYTHING! Dirty old bag!
Wasn’t she caught shagging Ian Paisley?
Oh yes, I’m old enough. Awful, miserable woman.
Whitehouse wasn’t a grifter, she genuinely believed in her shtick
The first KAREN
I’m not originally from the UK, but I’ve seen docs and British Scandal has a great series on her. I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to be around when she was around. A real piece of work.
It’s no good being moralistic holding a book which misrepresents Christ’s crucifixion. He is clothed but in reality crucified people were stripped naked to increase the shock to the people watching and to the victim. Total humility was used to persuade the plebs to behave.
Im too young to remember her in her prime but I know who she is.
When I was at uni, about 2004, there was a Channel 4 programme called Ban This Filth that was a parody of people like her. It was basically ‘look at this horrible porn, we should ban it’. Just a very tongue in cheek way of showing porn, a bit like Eurotrash.
She ruined Dr who. And for that I will always despise her.
Open Your Mind……
“….and of course, Mrs Hairy Whitemouse”
Bonus points for getting this reference without looking it up.
So that’s what brick top did before snatch
Never heard of her, however a quick Google would suggest she’s another person who tried to warn us that society was going down the pan and was ostracised and now we find ourselves with society down the pan.
Are you for real?! She’d have blue hair and be on the Far Left now. Taking offense to any and everything…!!
I hate christofascism
Yes unfortunately. She made John Calvin look woke.
I remember she tried to ban the galaxy’s greatest comic when I was a kid.
Maxine Peake portrayed her in a play at the Nottingham Playhouse a couple of months ago. She was phenomenal (as was Samuel Barnett who played everyone else from barrister John Smyth – the guy who the Archbishop of Canterbury recently resigned over – to Margaret Thatcher, a Roman Centurion to Mary’s mother).
The show was wonderful from start to finish and really looked at the nuance of her story, a really fascinating woman who truly believed her crusade was right but had little empathy for others.
I remember her calling Dr Who “teatime brutality for tots”
At the time I was like “Bitch, you don’t have to sell it to me, I’m already watching it”
I think she was totally sincere, but couldn’t understand that the world had changed and she didn’t want to/know how to change with it.
I used to laugh at her when I was young, but now I’m old and genuinely baffled by young people and their take on life, I have a little more understanding and sympathy.
The difference is I understand that things change and the world isn’t out of step with me, I’m out of step with the world.
And young people, it will happen to you in the unimaginable future when you’re old and set in your ways.
She just came across as a frosty knickers with a deep resentment. Nothing pleasant about her. 🥶
If anything the modern prudish and puritanical left seems to have picked up her mantle somewhat nowadays
BAN THIS SICK FILTH.
If she was around today she’d definitely be a massive transphobe.
She was a perverted old ho , all these pious types usually are
Miserable old woman.
She was in no way alt right. Fuck sake, this modern day labelling just dilutes any argument from either side. If your argument contains ‘alt right’, or ‘far left’ ‘I’m instantly switching off to whatever you have to say.
On topic though, I remember that awesome comic called Oink and they had Mary Lighthouse as a strip. Just fucking ripped the piss out of her. I think towards the mid 80s everyone just stopped paying attention to her.
I don’t think it’s the same as what’s happening at the moment though.
British Scandal with Matt Ford and Alice Levine did a great three parter on her.
Not a grifter, you couldn’t really get rich on it back in the day
Moral crusader and I disliked her as intensely for that as I dislike our contemporary moral crusaders (who are far more likely to think of themselves as progressive)
I’ve long since grudgingly conceded that she was dead right on paedophile information exchange and all the organisations I looked up to and respected were wrong. Much as I can’t stand moral crusaders we do sometimes need their stubborn willingness to say what is unpopular and unfashionable
I remember learning about her in my A Level History unit covering Britain from 1959 to 1975 😂
She might have got further if she had had any artistic sensibility or understanding but no, not a shred. She was sincere, plodding, dull and repressive as well as repressed.
Iconic, though: the roller-set hair, button earrings, textured skirt suits, neat loafers etc are vanished now but they were a stalwart of a certain kind of British woman for 30-40 years, Margaret Thatcher and Barbara Castle among them.
My core memory of her was when she was a guest-by-link-up on (I think it was called) The Sunday Show with Donna McPhail.
They asked her to gather her thoughts across the whole show and went back to her at the end to ask her opinion. She opened her mouth, said “Well…” and Donna McPhail cut in with “unfortunately we’re out of time” and ended the show.
She only gets remembered when people want to mock her.
ITT: folk who do not know what grifting is.
Haha, charade you are.
I actually met her at a fete in Essex, many years ago. Pleasant, polite, just like all the other old biddies.

I remember the experience.
Milky, milky.
Who was she? Was she before Ayn Rand?
