Fun Fact: Before England and Scotland staged the first international soccer match in 1872, they did two prototype matches where the Scottish team was selected based on equally tenuous connections…
Me Nans a Flanagan so I must be Irish. Basically me growing up, never told anyone that my actual surname is Cornish origin though, because that’s not “fancy” haha
You say you’re Scottish or Irish, then why are you speaking English?
Checkmate Yanky.
I’m Welsh, but have a Scottish last name. But god damn it I’m Welsh, I don’t know when in the past some drunken yobbo clutching his shortbread got lost on the way to buy meths for his average Tuesday morning beverage after a heavy night on heroin and battered Mars bars and ended up in Wales, and I also don’t care 😂 Americans are weird about that stuff.
my family is from the Staines massive
They’re always distant ancestors of Rob Roy The Bruce Bill Wallace too.
It’s weird that the Scots can be upset about this, but if you have one drop of non-white blood in you, they ask “yeah, but where are you really from?”
When it’s time to talk like this is the only time they understand that Europe isn’t a single country
Or German which like the English things is weird because all the food and places having German/English names.
But you do get better RPG buffs from the Celtic background so I can understand why they edit the character sheet.
So?
Americans are weird about this stuff.
Should be “I’m Scotch!”
American’s really have one great-grandma who arrived at Ellis Island in 1913 and say: “I’m Eye-talian capeesh?”
I’m a monkey
Lol I never thought about the fact no one claims to be English. I already thought this was ridiculous and somehow it seems more so now. Good observation.
England is too boring to them lol
Americans with Scottish ancestors, are as Scottish as a Doritos taco is Mexican.
Italian is the other option, it’s like they don’t want to be American.

I had this several times in America recently. “OMG OMG OMG YOULL NEVER BELIEVE THIS!!!…. MY FRIENDS GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS SCOTTISH!”
I’m half and half, my mother is from Scotland and my dad is American. I don’t claim to be Scottish and I don’t even bring it up to people because they always want to tell me how they’re Scottish/German/Irish/Italian/Norwegian, or any other assortment of places that they’ve never even set foot into, let along speak any lick of the language of. It drives me nuts.
*scattish
Because saying “I’m English” is fucking embarrassing even if you were born here. Why would anyone want to openly associate themselves with people who chant “it’s coming home” with cans of Carling before lunchtime.
I got this with Brits! I said I have family in America and they equated it to me being American cos I use some american words
They dont mean they are Scottish citizens, just that they are part of the Scottish-American group. For some groups this was important because of racism, some ethnicities and religions were discriminated against so they created a community.
That’s why fewer Americans claim to be English or German despite many more Americans having English or German ancestory
American here – I think why us Yanks do this, is because we yearn for heritage. America is still incredibly new in the grand scheme of countries, and many of us don’t identify our heritage as strictly American. Most of us are only 2-4th generation at the most. The traditions in our families, the meals we make when we are together comes from our grandparents who emigrated here from other countries and it’s part of what we identify ourselves with. Lastly, our genetic markers aren’t “American” they are Northwester European or British Isles. These genetic markers are part of who we are as humans, and it seems weird to just ignore that. Ethnicity ≠ nationality.
All that being said, some people do take it way too far in saying they are Irish or Welsh. But to deny that their families come from that area, that their families have traditions rooted in those countries is short sighted imo
Nobody wants to be of the former opressor
Ethnicity and nationality are not the same.Ethnicity doesn’t change no matter where you live.
I went over to Ireland this year and said, “don’t worry. I’m Welsh,” to everyone I met.
Pretty much everyone I met was English.
American Yankee Doodle here.
I always assume the people who love authority, will defend a hierarchy with their lives, and love to blindly follow orders to the letter are genetically English. Those that will only follow stupid instructions long enough for the boss to leave so we can actually do to correctly I see as genetically Irish or Scottish.
I will not be taking questions.
FWIW, a lot of Americans are familiar with their (patrilineal) families’ immigration story. When an American says they’re Scottish, Irish, Italian, German, etc, it’s short for Scottish-American, Irish-American, etc. The context of an American accent indicates the American part, so it’s often left off. They aren’t claiming to be Scottish citizens or know anything about modern Scotland. Yet even in their short American history. these are often distinct communities with distinct cultures, distinct regional distribution, and distinct histories.
I only really see European’s get hung up on this (troll face at the Brits). I’m not sure if it’s a cultural misunderstanding or a racial/cultural purity thing, but yall *really* don’t like Americans claiming their heritage from before they immigrated.
This shit again? Next time you take over the world, don’t name it New England and this won’t happen
As a Scottish person I find this so frustrating, it’s gotten to the point where sometimes if I say in a post or comment that I’m Scottish, I’ll specify that I mean as I was born here and still live here, so people don’t think I’m some annoying American that thinks their Scottish because their great-great-great-great grandfather was possibly Scottish.
